Linnetz structures his collections akin to Ralph Lauren's setups, but with a noticeable touch of irony and humor. Set against the backdrop of a late 1990s Venice Beach high school, the designer enjoyed connecting characters to costumes and translating them into clothing. The meticulous storytelling is impressive, and the attention to detail in the garments is equally captivating.
Linnetz expressed particular excitement about showcasing LA-produced sherpa-lined cotton jersey pieces for the first time, emphasizing the craftsmanship. Examples like wave hoodies and straight-legged track pants, along with a frayed California souvenir shirt and a washed cotton combat chino with subtly referential ERL labeling, exemplified the collection's careful curation.
Hand-fashioned SoCal-punk pieces by Linnetz were brilliant flights of fantasy, embodying the aesthetic of a Black Flag or Dead Kennedy's enthusiast. Vintage items, like a studded Birkin (possibly) and skater looks with ringer tees and gnarly marly knits, evoked the spirit of Mr. Bungle and early Faith No More. While personally resonating with my eternal adolescent penchant for nostalgia, objectively, this collection was a compelling combination of creative skills resulting in an impressive showcase. The only misstep? Allowing the surfer to take the wheel to the prom.
