In a televised speech, Hungary's President Katalin Novak announced her resignation, acknowledging her mistake in granting a pardon. She expressed regret for her decision and recognized that it had raised doubts about the zero tolerance policy towards child abuse.
During her speech, President Novak explained that she had granted the pardon in April, believing that the convicted individual had not exploited the vulnerability of the children under his care. However, she now recognizes that the lack of reasoning behind the pardon had undermined the public's confidence in the country's stance against paedophilia.
The announcement came amidst growing public outcry and protests demanding her resignation. Approximately 1,000 people took to the streets of the capital city to express their dissatisfaction, and opposition parties in Hungary had also called for her to step down.
One of the individuals pardoned by Novak in April 2023 was Endre K, the former deputy director of a children's home who had aided the previous director in hiding his crimes. Endre K had been sentenced to three years and four months in prison in 2022, and he was also banned from any involvement with minors for an additional five years.
The controversy surrounding the pardons and the subsequent protests have put immense pressure on President Novak and have raised concerns about the handling of child abuse cases in Hungary. As Novak's resignation takes effect, the country will now face the task of addressing these issues and restoring public trust in its commitment to safeguarding children's well-being...
