However, before showering praise on showrunner Nick Santora and his team of writers for including that clever meta reference in Patrick's dialogue, there's an interesting backstory you should know.
During TVLine's Season 2 post mortem Q&A with Santora, the question arose about how the Terminator 2 nod came to be. Was it Patrick's idea, perhaps? Or if not, how did he feel about the callback?
Santora chuckled and replied, "You're asking the question I don't want to answer because everyone thinks we're so smart and funny for doing it, but it was in there before Robert Patrick came in. I don't want to lie; that's the truth."
Back in May, it was announced that Rory Cochrane, known for his roles in "24" and "CSI: Miami," had to step down from the role of NYPD veteran-turned-New Age security chief Langston. Patrick was subsequently cast as the Season 2 antagonist.
Explaining the situation, Santora said, "Due to some scheduling conflicts, we had to recast. So, I called up Ripper [Robert Patrick] and said, 'I know this is short notice—like, you'll need to be on a plane tomorrow—but do you want to go to Toronto and work with some incredibly talented actors?' He didn't even ask to see a script because we had previously worked together on 'Scorpion.' He's a hard worker and exceptionally talented, and for some reason, he just jumped in."
Santora admitted that he had actually forgotten about the Sarah Connor line, even after the recasting. It was only when he saw the dailies that he realized its inclusion.
"I genuinely thought, if I'm being completely honest, 'Should I cut this line?'" Santora confessed. "Since it's a phone call, I could have easily given Saropian another line and shown the other side of the conversation. But I thought the fans might enjoy it. It's such an iconic movie franchise, and Robert Patrick is such an iconic actor, so let's have a little fun!"
